The main menu here is of course the fish. Freshly cought by the fisherman nearby. Popular fish here is Siakap or Seabass. Grilled traditionally on firewood with the fish wrapped by a banana leaf .

Siakap Bakar

Malay grilled fish is a bit difference from western style grilled fish. You can feel the difference when you ate a fish at Manhattan Fish Restaurant an then come here to eat. Usually western style grilled fish taste originally like a fish with no added ingredient and look neat from outside. But for malay, they tend to put spices on the fish and few pinched of salt together with turmeric powder to give the fish a taste.
Usually the grilled fish are enjoyed with nasi lemak (wrapped rice) and the sauces is made from tamarind juice mix with soy sauce and added fresh Malaysian chillies.

MEDAN IKAN BAKAR UMBAI / PERNU
Sign board
Medan Ikan Bakar Pernu is beautifully located near the sea a couple of kilometers into Umbai. There are about twenty different ikan bakar stalls lined neatly along a fishing village. One of the best things about these stall is that you get to choose your own fishes and crustaceans from a 'whole sampan' of seafood. You can choose from different varieties of kembung, siakap, caru, cockles, crabs, prawns, squids, kerapu and the list goes on and on. Your selection is then weighted, tagged to your table and then you wait for your selection to be grilled. Besides, Grilled Otak-Otak and Nasi Lemak Bungkus are also available here.
The seafood was fresh, the cooking, good, and the sauces were excellent. If you love fish and want to gauge a stall's abilities, go for the terubok. If it is well-prepared and served with a great sauce, you have found your ikan bakar stall.
